Cold storage effects on oxidative stress of Red Globe table grape rachises Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Campos-Vargas,Reinaldo; Zamora,Pablo; Contreras,Rodrigo; Köhler,Hans; Zúñiga,Gustavo E; Pérez-Donoso,Alonso; Defilippi,Bruno G.
Table grape (Vitis vinifera L.) quality includes the condition of both the berries and the rachis. In the present report, physiological parameters of Red Globe rachises from fully elongated inflorescences (RFEI) and from mature clusters were studied after storage at 0 or 20 °C for different durations. To understand changes in rachis physiology as a result of changes in temperature conditions and storage time, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) were measured. In addition, hydrogen peroxide content, membrane lipoperoxidation (TBARS), total phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity (FRAP) were assayed. TBARS was higher in mature rachises than in RFEI. This parameter remained constant throughout...

Rodrigues,Daniele Lima; Viana,Alexandre Pio; Vieira,Henrique Duarte; Santos,Eileen Azevedo; Silva,Fernando Higino de Lima e; Santos,Carlos Lacy.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the relative contribution of variables related to fruit production and to seed morphophysiological characteristics to the genetic divergence in passion fruit (Passiflora edulis) progenies, aiming at selecting progenies potentially responsive to fertilization. Ten progenies were evaluated under conditions of low (50% of the recommended dose of fertilizers) and high soil fertility (dose 50% higher than the recommended one), regarding variable sets related to production and to the morphological and physiological characteristics of seeds. The association between these sets was determined by the canonical correlation analysis and by the nearest-neighbor clustering method. The nutritional environments...

Crop loading studies on ‘Caricia’ and ‘Eva’ apples grown in a mild winter area Scientia Agricola
Castro,Damián César; Álvarez,Norma; Gabriel,Paola; Micheloud,Norma; Buyatti,Marcela; Gariglio,Norberto.
The crop load level of an apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) tree impacts fruit yield and quality parameters, tree vigor and biennial bearing. The optimal crop load is that which allows for consistent annual cropping and fruit quality acceptable to the market. We evaluated the effect of crop load on yield and fruit quality of two low-chill apples cv. ‘Caricia’ and ‘Eva’, growing in a mild winter area. During 2010 and 2011 crop load was manually adjusted from 2 or 3 to 17 fruits cm−2 of trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA). Fruit yield was positively related to crop load in both cultivars but mean fruit weight diminished as the crop load increased. For both cultivars, the production of non-commercial and small-sized fruit increased, whereas production of...

EARLY SPRING APPLICATION OF AMINOETHOXYVINILGLYCINE (AVG) INCREASES FRUIT SET AND YIELD OF ‘ROCHA’ PEARS Rev. Bras. Frutic.
PASA,MATEUS DA SILVEIRA; CARRA,BRUNO; SILVA,CARINA PEREIRA DA; CIOTTA,MARLISE NARA; BRIGHENTI,ALBERTO FONTANELLA; PEREIRA,ADÍLSON JOSÉ.
ABSTRACT The low fruit set is one of the main factors leading to poor yield of pear orchards in Brazil. Ethylene is associated with abscission of flowers and fruitlets. Then, the application of ethylene synthesis inhibitors, such as AVG, is a potential tool to increase fruit set of pears. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of AVG, sprayed at different rates and timings, on fruit set, yield and fruit quality of ‘Rocha’ pear. The study was performed in a commercial orchard located in the municipality of São Joaquim, SC, during the growing seasons of 2014/2015 and 2015/2016. Plant material consisted of ‘Rocha’ pear trees grafted on quince rootstock ‘BA29’. AVG was tested at different rates (60 mg L-1 and 80 mg L-1) and timings [full...

Effect of aminoethoxyvinilglycine (AVG) on preharvest fruit drop and maturity of apples Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Amarante,Cassandro Vidal Talamini do; Simioni,Anderson; Megguer,Clarice Aparecida; Blum,Luiz Eduardo Bassay.
Apple trees cultivars Gala and Fuji were sprayed four weeks before commercial harvest with aminoethoxyvinilglycine (AVG), at doses of 0, 125, or 250 mg L-1, and assessed for preharvest fruit drop, fruit growth, and maturation on tree. In 'Gala', 64 days after AVG spraying, fruit drop for control treatment was 85%, and AVG (at 125 and 250 mg L-1) reduced it to 10%. In 'Fuji', 64 days after AVG spraying, fruit drop for control was 6%, while treatments with AVG (at 125 and 250 mg L-1) increased fruit drop to 10%. AVG was a powerful retardant of fruit maturation for 'Gala' but not for 'Fuji'. In 'Gala', the most affected attribute was the skin background color, followed, in decreasing order, by soluble solids content, the starch index, skin red color, the...

Effect of Arbucula Myrrhizal Fungi on an Ecological Crop of Chili Peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Castillo R,Claudia ; Sotomayor S,Leonardo ; Ortiz O,César; Leonelli C,Gina; Borie B,Fernando; Rubio H,Rosa.
Mapuche farmers in southern Chile have been cultivating local ecotypes of chili pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), called locally “Cacho de cabra” for many decades. It is used to make “merkén”, a condiment that is consumed locally and exported. This vegetable requires a nursery stage and can obtain nutritional benefits from symbiotic associations such as mycorrhizal fungi, achieving a better adaptation to transplanting. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are obligate biotrophes appearing in abundance in agroecosystems with conservation management. The aim of this study was to compare effectiveness of two AMF, a commercial mycorrhizal inoculant (IC, Glomus intraradices) and another native (IN, Glomus claroideum) with a control without inoculation (-I) on the...

Effects of fruiting spur thinning on fruit quality and vegetative growth of sweet cherry (Prunus avium) Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Ayala,Marlene; Andrade,María P.
High density sweet cherry (Prunus avium) orchards using highly productive cultivars and dwarfing rootstocks usually require crop load regulation to achieve high quality fruit. Among the strategies used to reduce crop load in highly productive combinations, fruiting spur thinning (FST, spur extinction) before budbreak has been suggested to be an effective way to improve fruit size. Currently, there is little information about the effect of spur thinning on sweet cherry orchards using self-fertile cultivars grafted on vigorous rootstocks. For this reason, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of manual FST on fruit quality and vegetative growth of the cultivar 'Lapins' grafted on the rootstock 'Mazzard F-12/L with 0, 50 and 75% spur...

Effects of levels of nitrogen and potassium on yield and fruit maturation of irrigated guava trees in the São Francisco Valley Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Lima,Maria Auxiliadora Coêlho de; Bassoi,Luís Henrique; Silva,Davi José; Santos,Polyane de Sá; Paes,Prissila de Castro; Ribeiro,Paula Rose de Almeida; Dantas,Bárbara França.
Yield and physical and chemical characteristics of 'Paluma' guava fruit were evaluated as a function of the harvest at different maturity stages, under influence of nitrogen and potassium fertilization, in Petrolina, State of Pernambuco, Brazil. Fertilizer rates were 67 kg N + 33 kg K2O, 133 kg N + 67 kg K2O, 200 kg N + 100 kg K2O and 267 kg N + 133 kg K2O per hectare. Fruits were evaluated at maturity stages 2, 3, 4 and 5, established according to peel color. Higher doses of N and K induced higher yields. Nevertheless, fertilization with 200 kg of N + 100 kg of K per hectare improved fruit quality, delaying ascorbic acid breakdown and conserving pulp firmness. Main changes took place at maturity stages 4 and 5, when the fruit should present ideal...

Ethylene, Enzymatic and Respiratory Pattern Evolution in Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica (Thunb.) Lindl.) cv. Golden Nugget in the Last four Sequential Stages of Maturation Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Undurraga M,Pedro L; Olaeta C,José A; Cancino,Cristian.
There is some controversy regarding the respiratory pattern of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica [Thunb.] Lindl.). Thus in order to provide information on this aspect of loquat, fruit of 50-70 g, from cv. Golden Nugget were harvested in four stages of maturity: green (BBCH 709), color break (BBCH 801), yellow (BBCH 807), and orange (BBCH 809). The parameters evaluated in each stage were: soluble solids, titratable acidity, respiration, ethylene generation, and activity of the enzymes pectin methyl esterase (PME), peroxidase, polyphenoloxidase (PPO), polygalacturonase (PG), and cellulose, and the soluble solids:acidity ratio was calculated. The results show that ethylene concentration increased at the time of color break, which was not the case for the change in...

Evaluation of a Non-Destructive Impact Sensor to Determine On-Line Fruit Firmness Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Homer,Ian; García-Ramos,Francisco Javier; Ortiz-Cañavate,Jaime; Ruiz-Altisent,Margarita.
A non-destructive impact sensor to measure on-line fruit firmness was evaluated. This sensor is an adaptation of a static model used in the laboratory to measure fruit quality and was installed in an experimental fruit packing line with a commercial sizer chain. The firmness index is related to the acceleration-time curve supplied by an accelerometer attached to an impacting arm. The main objective of this study was to evaluate sensor performance and sources of variation. We made classification trials on three fruits: peaches (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch), apples (Malus domestica Borkh.), and pears (Pyrus communis L.), as well as working trials, such as placing the fruit, orientation, and others. The sensor works correctly at a speed of 7 fruits s-1 (0.63 m...
